Preparing for Bariatric Surgery

In some cases, patients are referred by their surgeon or other team member for psychotherapy prior to the scheduling of their surgery. There are many reasons for these referrals, including dealing with an eating disorder, processing a trauma, and examining the underpinnings of emotional eating.

Because of the numerous reasons for these referrals, individual psychotherapy is almost always the right approach. The therapy techniques differ based on the individual’s needs, and they include cognitive-behavioral, exposure therapy, and journaling of emotions. Sometimes couples therapy is helpful if the issues are with a partner, and this service is also available.

An individual evaluation is required before starting individual therapy.
